A plane veered off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport today after heavy rainstorm lashed the city.
The plane, reported to have carried 141 passengers and crew on board, skidded onto the grassy area as it was taxiing to the gate.
Two passengers reported feeling unwell and were sent to hospital, stated Hong Kong’s Airport Authority.
The authority reported a China Eastern Airlines flight MU 765, which departed from Nanjing, eastern China, skidded onto a grassy area on the A3 runway at Hong Kong International Airport.
The plane landed at 10:52 am local time.
However, it slid off the runway with both front wheels and a right rear wheel on the grass next to the track.
China Eastern Airlines confirmed the incident and posted on Weibo, a Chinese social media account, that there were no fatalities and apologised to the public.
According to SCMP, the adverse weather condition had caused flooding in parts of Hong Kong.
The airstrip was temporarily closed delaying affecting scores of flights.
109 flights were delayed both incoming and outgoing, stated the Airport Authority.
The Civil Aviation Department said it would be investigating the cause of the incident.
Hong Kong Observatory issued this year’s first ‘black rainstorm warning’, the highest of three heavy rain signals, before midday.
Areas of the special administrative region have been affected by flooding with people left scrambling for sandbags.
Around 150 mm of rain has been recorded at the airport since early Wednesday, reported the Hong Kong Observatory.
