Three paratroopers in an iconic photograph of Israel’s capture of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City during the 1967 Six-Day War have recreated the image 50 years after the conflict.
Zion Karsenti, Yitzhak Yifat and Haim Oshri, all aged 22 at the time, were fresh out of battle when they were first pictured in front of the most sacred site in Judaism.
After two days of fierce fighting, Israeli troops evicted Jordanian forces from east Jerusalem, site of the Old City which is also home to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and the Holy Sepulchre church.
“We kept on fighting until we reached the Al-Aqsa mosque,” recalled Karsenti at a ceremony in the Old City organised by the Israeli foreign ministry, until their commander joyfully announced they had reached the Wailing Wall.
Veteran photographer David Rubinger, who died in March, took the shot which became a symbol of Israel’s victory in the 1967 Middle East war, since when the Jewish state has annexed east Jerusalem, a move not recognised by the international community.
