Lightning struck twice as Italy’s Sofia Goggia won her second World Cup event in two days with victory in the Super-G at the 2018 Winter Olympic venue on Sunday.
Twenty four hours after securing her first-ever World Cup win at Jeongseon, Goggia edged out American star Lindsey Vonn and Slovenia’s Ilka Stuhec in a carbon copy of Saturday’s downhill podium at Jeongseon, venue for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
Goggia clocked 1min 20.35sec before Vonn finished just four hundredths outside that time, with Stuhec taking third with a run of 1:20.86.
“Standing on the podium with these two means a lot to me,” said Goggia after twice ending a hoodoo of nine podiums this season without a maiden victory.
“I’m pretty happy with my skiing today and yesterday. I really like the course and I tried to push as hard as I could.”
Vonn, still feeling her way back after nearly a year out with knee and arm injuries, has now failed to win a World Cup Super-G since January 2016.
“I’ve struggled this season in Super-G and a lack of training hasn’t allowed me to be confident,” said the former Olympic champion.
“I’m disappointed to be a few hundredths from two wins but I always feel like in skiing, the luck will come back to you,” she added, looking ahead to next year’s Olympics.
“The main point of this weekend is that I’m confident on this hill. I’m hoping that next year that luck can come back and I can be on the top podium.”
Stuhec jumped to the top of the Super-G standings by 15 points from Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather, who finished ninth in 1:21.67.
“Today was different,” said the Slovenian, who also tops the downhill ahead of the last round in Aspen, Colorado, later this month and is closing on American Mikaela Shiffrin at the top of the World Cup overall standings.
“My run was so funny as I was holding back a little too much from the start,” added Stuhec, now on 1145 points to Shiffrin’s 1323 with six of 37 events left.
“But I felt I should push more in the second and third part of the course I did that.”
