New York’s famed Empire State Building lit up with sky-high iconic fashion photographs after nightfall on Wednesday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of style magazine Harper’s Bazaar.
Beginning at 8:30pm and running to midnight, the north side of the building flashed iconic shoots and cultural moments from the pages of Harper’s into the New York skyline.
Among reproductions of the glossy pages that shined over Manhattan, and streamed live on the magazine’s Facebook page, was Barbadian superstar Rihanna sitting in the mouth of Jaws and the most recent cover featuring Kendall Jenner.
The projections also included some of Harper’s most famous images from the past – including works by Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon, and featuring old Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn and Lauren Bacall.
Kendall attended a start-studded viewing party for the event, held at the Rainbow Room.
‘Empire State building ft. meeee,’ Kendall captioned a photo of her cover to Instagram.
Since 1976 the Empire State Building has traditionally changed the color of its tower lights to celebrate or commemorate different occasions and organizations throughout the year.
In 2012, they installed a new computer driven LED light system capable of displaying 16 million colors, which can change instantaneously.
Wednesday night’s display was projected over 42 floors, spanning 500 feet tall and 186 feet wide.
Harper’s Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey said she wanted to give New Yorkers ‘the greatest fashion show in the world,’ according to the New York Times.
Harper’s partnered with Tiffany & Co. to produce the event, and declined to say how much the light show cost.
‘It’s wildly expensive but it will be worth every penny,’ Bailey said.
Since upgrading the lighting system at the tower, the building has hosted a few other similar events. On election day, as the ballots were being counted, the states were called on the side of the building.
A display for endangered wildlife in 2015 cost around $1million.
