Derek Fisher, a former Los Angeles Laker and ex-head coach of the New York Knicks, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after his car overturned on a Los Angeles freeway, authorities said Sunday.
Both Fisher and his lone passenger, former “Basketball Wives” reality TV show star Gloria Govan, appeared to escape serious injury in the accident, which occurred shortly after 3 am (1000 GMT).
The California Highway Patrol said the 42-year-old Fisher allowed his Cadillac to veer right onto a paved shoulder.
It hit a raised concrete curb and guardrail, which caused the vehicle to flip over and come to rest on its roof.
During the investigation, officers learned that Fisher had been drinking, the CHP said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Fisher, who spent the majority of his NBA playing career with the Lakers, helping them to five NBA titles, lives in the Southern California city.
He coached the New York Knicks from 2014-2016.
Govan, 32, is the ex-wife of Golden State Warriors guard Matt Barnes.
Barnes, a teammate of Fisher’s in Los Angeles from 2010-2012, was banned for two games by the NBA in 2015 for an altercation with Fisher at the home of Govan, who was then Barnes’s estranged wife.
