India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday became the fastest bowler to claim 250 Test wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 388 on day four of the one-off Test in Hyderabad.
Ashwin achieved the milestone in his 45th match by taking the final wicket of the innings — Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for a fighting century in Hyderabad.
The hosts, who made 687 for six declared in their first innings, did not enforce the follow-on despite being 299 runs ahead and had reached one without loss at lunch.
Rahim led Bangladesh’s resistance for nearly three sessions with his patient 127 before becoming the 250th Test victim of the 30-year-old Ashwin who surpassed Australia paceman Dennis Lillee’s record. Lillee took 48 matches to reach the same mark.
Ashwin, who made his debut against the West Indies in 2011, is currently the top-ranked Test bowler in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ratings.
The off spiiner and fellow slow bowler Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets apiece while paceman Umesh Yadav took three for 84 for India, who are the world’s top-ranked Test team.
The visitors, who started the day on 322 for six, lost overnight batsman Mehedi Hasan (51) in the first over.
Indian seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled Hasan to end an 87-run partnership with Rahim.
Ninth-ranked Bangladesh are playing their first Test on Indian soil.
