The desire of gender activities and feminists to have more women elected into Ghana’s lawmaking body has been boosted in the 2016 general elections.
All the parliamentary results declared so far by the Electoral Commission (EC) indicate that the number of female Members of Parliament (MPs) for the incoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has increased from 16 in the 2012 polls to 24 in the just ended elections.
The Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic will thus have more NPP female MPs from January 7, 2017 to January 6, 2021 as the incoming opposition National Democratic NDC will have less than a dozen female legislators.
Out of the 24 female MPs, Greater Accra Region has the highest number of six with Central and Ashanti regions having five each.
Eastern Region has four female MPs, Western region has two, Brong Ahafo and Northern have one each.
Female MPs increased in Ashanti Region from four to five, Eastern from three to four, Central Region from one to five, Northern from zero to one, Western from one to two while Brong Ahafo and Greater Accra regions maintained their numbers of one and six respectively.
