President-elect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has joined hundreds of worshipers at the Accra Ridge Church Sunday morning to give thanks to God for his historic victory in the 2016 general election.
He was accompanied by his wife Rebecca and children as well as members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday declared the NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, the winner of the 2016 polls.
He finally secured the presidency after a third time bid, beating incumbent President Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) with 53.85% of the total votes cast in last Wednesday’s polls.
Nana Akufo-Addo rode on the back of the valid votes cast to become Ghana’s fifth president under the fourth Republic.
President Mahama however trailed behind with 44.40% thus truncating his second term bid.
His defeat makes him a history maker as he is the first incumbent to lose an election since Ghana returned to multi-party democracy in 1992.
Addressing the congregation at the Ridge Church, Nana Akufo-Addo thanked the Almighty profoundly for bringing him this far and for giving him victory.
“There are so many people here who have kept me in their prayers, who have done acts of solidarity towards me and my wife and family that I will always remember and I will always be very grateful and the opportunity today to be able to say so.
“I hope and pray that in everything that I am going to do, I will be guided by the almighty God. I believe sincerely, that it is only with his guidance and support that I can do anything positive for the people of Ghana. I will be on my knees every day, praying for guidance and support from the almighty so that we can, working together bring prosperity and progress to our nation.
“It been an extraordinary week for us but we have come out of it, especially because they saw the Ghanaian people especially in the aftermath behave in a very beautiful manner to be able to enhance the image of the country and show the world that there are countries in Africa like Ghana that can do the right thing and behave properly.”
Nana Akufo-Addo called for support from the congregation to help him carry out his mandate as president for the years ahead.
“I am counting on all of you here to continue to give me the solidarity, the support and keep me in your prayers every single day for the years ahead.”
