A member of the defunct Ghanaian music group, Dobble, Nana Yaw aka Ennwai, has disclosed to Citi Showbiz that the group targeted the Easter festivities, when they were composing their hit song, Christy.
“Yes, we did. The whole idea was to make the song the official Kwahu Easter song,” Ennwai stated.
The song, which has since gained popularity in the country, has been used in most adverts for Easter events, especially those that are to be held in Kwahu. Apart from Christy being a hit song, what may have made it so relatable to people is the mention of Kwahu and its suburbs in the song which is also probably why it has been so successful as a Kwahu Easter song.
In the song, a young man goes to ask of his girlfriend from her mother, only to be told that she (the girlfriend) had gone to Kwahu. So he asks whether the girl has gone to Abetifi, Obomeng or to any of the other Kwahu suburbs.
The Dobble duo, who broke up last year, released Christy last year and it has earned them two nominations in the forthcoming Vodafone Ghana Music Awards: in the Highlife Song of the Year and the Vodafone Song of the Year categories.
Nana Yaw, known in showbiz circles as Ennwai has, after the split, released a few of songs including Krom Aye De, Halle Halle and I Do Yawa.
According to Ennwai, his biggest challenge in the industry is that his fans appear to find it difficult to forgive them [Dobble] for splitting.
“Some of [our] fans are so hurt that they don’t want to listen to our new, individual projects but as a chef who makes food for the soul, I will make sure I go the extra mile to serve them the best meals,” he said.
Asked how he feels about the success of the Christy song, he disclosed: “I have mixed feelings. Sometimes I get sad, because we are not getting what we were supposed to have gotten from that [despite all] the hustle, but it is all good because God knows why.”
At present, Ennwai is working on all the videos of his solo music projects and will be touring Europe this summer.
