Another creative artiste, Makafui Awuku, has composed a poem, in his quest to help stop illegal mining in Ghana.
For the past few weeks, media networks and some organisations have been active in waging a war against the practice which is popularly known as ‘galamsey.’
A rapper called The Gem has done a good song on the subject, just as Gombilla The Poet, who has also presented his thoughts in poetry. Celebrated music Kojo Antwi has also disclosed his plans of doing a song to that effect.
Below is poet and writer Makafui’s poem titled ‘The Galamer, Our Dilemma’:
We have been betrayed
Our airwaves trying to lead the way
People are having their say, the politicians their wage.
The wages of galamsey is seen
Our lands are being given away anyway
The perpetrators are having their way
Our fears will be allayed
But our water bodies contaminated with clay
The life in them decay
But the cost we cannot defray the chemicals won’t be washed away
The real price we will pay.
Our lives will be left in disarray if we let them have the leeway
They will end up flying away
The negative impact will outweigh the gains
Let’s not be swayed and led astray
Galamsey needs to be stopped straightaway
We cannot let the fight fade away and the criminals to get away
We have to protect our waterways
Our lives depend on it in every way.
As the #StopGalamseyNow campaign steadily reaches its crescendo, it is expected that every citizen of Ghana gets involved so it becomes easy to eradicate this nemesis which has become an albatross hanging on the necks of Ghanaians.
