The Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGA), raised an estimated GH¢32,000 for the Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWeF) and the MUSIGA Academy at this year’s edition of the MUSIGA Grand Ball which came off Friday, November 4, at the Banquet Hall of the State House.
To raise the funds, MUSIGA auctioned off a number of musical instruments and items belonging to legendary Ghanaian musicians including the Best of Nana Ampadu’ album, PK Yamoah’s guitar, AB Crentsil’ dondo and Rev. Kusi Berko’s accordion
This year’s event was also used to raise awareness for peaceful general elections on December 7.
Being an event meant for music lovers, there was ample provision of quality music from a collection of both old and new artistes.
Bob Pinodo, Pozo Hayes, the Blind Messiah, Tagoe Sisters, Naa Amanua gave patrons a taste of the old school music while Wiyaala and Kofi Kinaata represented the new school.
The emcees for the occasion Nhyira Addo and Joselyn Dumas kept things lively. Comedian DKB was also on hand to feed guests with rib-crcaking jokes throughout the evening.
Speaking at the Grand Ball, Chizzy Wailer, National Organiser of MUSIGA said although aged musicians have made the country proud through their music, they are currently battling ill health and various forms of incapacitation.
“Indeed, the artistic works of our predecessors are truly inspiring and based on that, we humbly call on all to honour and appreciate our gallant men and women while we nurture, maintain and sustain the treasures of our musicians both old and new,” he said.
On her part, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Tourism, Culture and the Creative Arts said her ministry supports the initiative by MUSIGA to provide a forum for captains of industry to network while enjoying quality entertainment from some of the finest entertainers in the country.
The MUSIGA Grand Ball was also used to honour Mr Edward Boateng of Global Media Alliance, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu and Kasapreko Company for their long-standing contribution to the development of the music sector in this country.
