UK’S foreign secretary, Boris Johnson has assured that the United Kingdom will maintain its £130m annual aid package to Ghana to enhance the bilateral trade relationship between both countries.
According to Boris Johnson, the decision forms part of UK’s global vision to spend 9.7% of its GDP on aid of which Ghana will be a beneficiary.
The United Kingdom (UK) government earlier threatened to cut aid to Ghana if the country persists in not respecting gay rights. It made the same threat against Uganda.
In 2011, UK government cut aid to Malawi by £19?million after two gay men were sentenced to 14 years hard labour.
UK’s International Development Secretary, Andrew Mitchell even threatened to impose further ‘fines’ against Ghana and Uganda for hardline anti-gay and lesbian measures,
Meanwhile Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has told the world that Africa is more interested in trade than aid.
Speaking at the fifth annual World Government Summit in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Bawumia said the vision of the Akufo-Addo administration is to establish a strong relationship with the “world driven more by trade than aid.”
