The Association of Ghana industries has asked the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to put in adequate measures to ensure that items produced in the country were of high standards.
That, according to the President of AGI, Mr James Asare Adjei, was necessary if Ghanaian businesses were desirous of competing equally with their foreign counterparts.
He said this during the launch of the sixth edition of AGI Ghana Industry and Quality Awards in Accra.
It was on the theme: “Promoting quality standards in sixty years of Ghana’s industrial development.”
Awards
This year’s awards, which will come off in November 2017, will reward companies in the Quality category.
The winner of the National Quality Award will then compete in an ECOWAS Quality Awards event to be held in June in 2018.
Mr Asare-Adjei said competing in the ECOWAS Awards event would create an international platform for the winning company to leverage to promote its products and corporate image while marketing Ghana as a preferable industrial hub in the sub-region.
The other categories of awards include Best Corporate Social Responsibility Company, Best Company Employer of the Year and Best Practices in Sustainable Manufacturing Company.
Rationale
The Chairperson of the Awards and Research Committee, Mrs Nora Bannerman-Abbott, said the awards would reward excellence, innovation and hard work. It would also develop the tenet to become the benchmark for awards in Ghana.
She added that the awards were to enhance and showcase Ghanaian businesses in the international market.
Assurance
For his part, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, lauded industries in the country for their contribution to national economy.
He gave an assurance that the government would put in appropriate measures to address their challenges.
The minister, however, advised the industries to add value to their products to enable them to attract both local and international markets.
