Importers and Exporters in Ghana are calling on government to engage them when taking decisions on policies that affect their operations.
They argue that they have observed with worry government’s continuous meetings with investors across the world on matters of concern to them without including a representative from their outfit.
Speaking to Citi Business News, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana Samson Asaaki Awingobit said government continues neglect of key stakeholders in policy making could derail gains made by government.
Citing a recent visit by President Akufo-Addo to ports of Togo, Mr. Awingobit was the view that the team could have included the Importers and Exporters Association to help address similar issues that affect both nations.
“The president paid a familiarization tour at the ports of Togo. If we were included in all these we will also use the opportunity to know what is going on in Togo. Assuming an importer from Togo brings his cargo, maybe he or she will get people to help him clear by himself. So the point is that if they don’t involve us, they will definitely not involve us in their policy making,” he lamented.
Mr. Awingobit further stated that their organization will not succumb to policies put out by government that do not take seek their concerns.
“At the end of the day, they would want to bring a policy that we are not informed of, and if we are not informed and educated about it that is where you will see that importers and exporters and will not allow the policy to go through,” he said.
