The Ga Central Municipal Assembly is expected to raise over GH¢2 million through internally generated fund (IGF) for development projects within the municipality in the coming year.
The figure shows an upward adjustment over the GH¢1 million which was earmarked for projects in 2016.
To be able to raise the funds, the assembly has, therefore, increased revenues charged on property rates, licensing rates, lands and royalties rates, fines, penalties and forfeits and other miscellaneous revenues.
For instance, lands and royalties rates which used to be between the ranges of GH¢2,000 and GH¢3,000 will now go for about GH¢6,000 in 2017, while licensing rates which went for about GH¢5,000 would go for GH¢920,000 in 2017 until it is reviewed the following year.
This was made known by the Municipal Budget Officer, Mr Enyega Atta Fiagbor, when he was reading the budget for 2017 at a General Assembly meeting at Sowutuom in Accra.
A motion was moved for the budget to be subsequently accepted by the General Assembly after the reading was done by Mr Fiagbor.
The two-day programme was used to discuss issues relating to the development of the assembly and some new initiatives to take to raise more funds for development projects.
This was the last general assembly held by the municipality before the year ends, and it was expected to educate the residents through the assembly members on what they can do to help the assembly grow and increase in productivity.
In his address, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Aristo Aryee, said a lot of the money would be committed to rehabilitation and the construction of new roads, sanitation, education, health care and the general planning and development of the municipality.
He reiterated the need for residents to deepen the collaboration with the assembly, “Since the development of any assembly is a shared responsibility.”
Defending the increase in the rates, Mr Aryee said that was one of the ways the assembly could reach its set targets, which would eventually benefit everyone in the municipality.
In the coming year, Mr Aryee promised that the assembly would see a lot of development with the construction and rehabilitation of various roads which were in deplorable states in the area.
He emphasised that the assembly would continue to work on the Ablekuma CP, Palas Town road link and construct new ones which had been earmarked.
