Chief Executive Officer of Stratcomm Africa, Esther Cobbah, organisers of the Garden and Flower Show says Ghana could earn billions of dollars from flower exports annually while its citizens directly or indirectly earned a living from the industry.
“What is really satisfying about the Show is that there has been a significant raising of national consciousness about the value to be derived from gardens and flowers, with growing interest, amongst young people especially.
As we celebrate our 60th year of independence, we can aim to bequeath a greener, wealthier, healthier and more beautiful Ghana”, Ms Cobbah said in a statement in Accra on Thursday.
She added, ‘we can save some foreign exchange by cultivating some of our floriculture and horticulture needs as well as earn foreign exchange by positioning Ghana as a beautiful tourism and investment destination.’
The innovative Ghana Garden & Flower Movement and its flagship activity, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show, celebrate five years later this year. The fifth edition of the Show will be taking place in early September.
Coinciding with Ghana’s sixtieth (60th) year, the Show continues to focus on contributing to national development through income generation, job creation, environmental conservation and beautification. It also seeks to facilitate the realisation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Ghana.
Initiated in 2013, the Movement has been promoting among Ghanaians the importance of floriculture and horticulture with a view to deriving from Ghana’s rich flora and fauna, personal, community and national benefits.
In the past four years, the Movement has created increased awareness about the commercial, aesthetic and psychological benefits of horticulture and floriculture.
The Show has grown tremendously with participation increasing from 14 exhibitors and 1,400 visitors in 2013 to close to 100 exhibitors and almost 15,000 visitors in 2016, according to the statement.
We are forever grateful to the various organizations who have supported the activities of the movement through sponsorship, time, treasure and talent.
Plans are underway for the launch of the Show which will be held in September.
The Ghana Garden and Flower Show is a flagship activity of the innovative Ghana Garden and Flower Movement that was initiated with the first edition of the Show in August 2013. The movement seeks to create awareness among Ghanaians about the commercial, aesthetic and psychological benefits of horticulture and floriculture.
It seeks to celebrate Ghana’s unique flora and fauna, whilst pointing people to the income generating and job creation opportunities inherent in them. Ultimately, the aim of the Show is to encourage the harnessing of our flora and fauna for national development and improved livelihoods.
