The Institute of Leadership and Development, a non-profitable organization has called on the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) not to be selective in cracking the whip on irresponsible advertising of alcoholic beverages in the country.
Commending the FDA for the order to recall Adonko bitters’ batch number 201 following its alleged abuse by minors at an Easter Monday concert at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, the institute urged the authority to clamp down on all companies engaged in illegitimate marketing strategies.
In an interview with Graphic Online, the Director of the institute, Mr. Benjamin Anabila said the FDA must investigate and sanction alcoholic producers involved in reckless marketing in order to bring about sanity in the system.
He added that the FDA must not be seen to be victimizing Angel Group of Companies, producers of Adonko Bitters alone whilst other companies involved in similar or worst activities go unpunished.
“The Food and Drugs Authority’s sanctions including a ban and fine imposed on Angel Group of Companies is commendable and lawful, but they must not be seen to be victimizing the company,” he said
He added however that the FDA must be allowed to discharge its constitutionally assigned duties without any interference from the allies of the alcohol industry.
He emphasized that the youth were at risk of the irresponsible advertisement.
