Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama joined Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan led and Ivorian Head of State, Dr. Alassane Ouattara to open Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo Nigeria yesterday, with Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON, as chief host.
The 30,000 – capacity venue, with a bullet–proof State Box that has 70 seats, has been described by the Vice President of Ghana Football Association, Mr. Fred Crentsil (who was sent by CAF to inspect the venue) as being “among the best you can find anywhere in the world.”
President Jonathan had described the 30,000 capacity stadium as a great source of pride to the state and the nation in general. This, he attributed to the fast growing economic pace of the sports industry estimated to be $145.3billion by 2015.
The event which kicked off with a lot of cultural displays, dance and the appearance of various artistes including Tiwa Savage, Kaycee among others.
The event was also marked with long speeches by host Governor, Godswill Akpabio and President Goodluck Jonathan.
An international friendly between Nigeria and Ghana U-23 Olympic team climaxed activities at the commissioning ceremony.
The warm-up game between the two West African nations is to officially open the new stadium, which is also known as the Nest of Champions, and the winners of the one-day friendly will receive the Transformation Cup for their efforts.
